70-80% of Weckman’s coated sheet metal products are manufactured in an environmentally responsible manner. SSAB GreenCoat® steel and Arcelor Mittal’s environmentally friendly products are part of Weckman Steel’s range. In the future, Weckman sheet metal will utilize fossil-free steel. Fossil-free steel production will reduce Finland’s carbon dioxide emissions by 7%.
Steel manufacturing is one of the largest sources of CO2 emissions. Therefore, steel mills aim to significantly reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. This is important to Weckman. “Our starting point has always been to rely on steel suppliers and partners who also take responsibility for environmental issues. Their innovations directly affect the carbon footprint of our production and construction projects,” says Marko Seppänen, Product Line Manager for Weckman sheet metal products.
More Ecological Thin-Gauge Steel Sheets an Essential Part of Weckman’s Range
Weckman thin-gauge steel sheets are used in modern roofing profiles, industrial wall profiles, roof and wall purlins, and trailer side profiles. Thin-gauge steel products are delivered throughout Finland, the Nordic countries, and Europe. The thin-gauge steel sheets use, among others, SSAB GreenCoat® steel, whose bio-based paint coating replaces a significant portion of the fossil oil used in paint coating production with rapeseed oil.
The GreenCoat® coating developed by SSAB is Finland’s best-known exterior coating for building materials containing bio-based raw materials. As a GreenCoat® partner, Weckman has been involved in developing and testing GreenCoat® steels, which, thanks to their technical properties, have a longer life cycle than traditionally coated steels.
“More ecological building materials are an essential part of our range. Demand is constantly growing as awareness and responsibility increase among consumers and professional builders. We have been involved in developing future coatings with SSAB, and our cooperation continues,” Seppänen states.

Fossil-Free Steel as Raw Material for Weckman Thin-Gauge Steel Sheets
Steel mills aim to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by as much as 35% by 2032 through fossil-free steel as well as electrification of their operations’ energy use and the use of biofuels. Fossil-free steel production will reduce Finland’s carbon dioxide emissions by 7%.
“When emissions are brought under control in primary steel production, the effects are seen throughout the production chain. Simply moving away from old blast furnace technology reduces steel manufacturing emissions by 70%,” says Seppänen.
Properly Maintained, an Eternal Weckman Thin-Gauge Steel Sheet
To ensure the longest possible service life for sheet metal products, proper maintenance is very important. “A 50-year service life in accordance with life-cycle thinking is very easy to achieve. With a properly treated and maintenance-painted surface, corrosion resistance is truly remarkable,” Seppänen states. Regular maintenance painting, as well as the removal of moss and debris, helps take care of the investment. “By following our maintenance instructions, you ensure a long life cycle for your sheet metal product,” Seppänen suggests.
Weather changes, Weckman endures.
For example, about 45% of SSAB’s global steel production is based on the use of recycled steel; in Finnish and Swedish production, the share is 20–25%. The rest is produced from iron ore. Steel products should always be returned to the cycle at the end of their service life, as steel can be recycled indefinitely. Manufacturing from recycled steel produces less than one-tenth of the carbon dioxide emissions compared to iron ore-based production. “All Weckman sheet metal products are 100% recyclable material,” Seppänen states.
