Purlins

Weckman light purlins and steel purlins

Purlins are an important part of load-bearing structures, as they act as secondary supports distributing loads, improving structural durability and enabling longer frame spans without intermediate supports. Proper design of the purlin structure, taking into account load requirements and environmental conditions, selecting the correct purlin type and thickness, and placement all affect the safety and longevity of the structures.

Weckman light purlins are CE-marked.

Purlin materials, types and sizes

The manufacturing material for steel purlins is hot-dip galvanized steel grade S350GD+Z in accordance with standard SFS-EN 1993-1-3.

Purlin types and sizes

Purlin models Z-, C-, U- and hat purlins.
Purlin heights 100–300 mm
Purlin nominal thicknesses 1.2–3.0 mm

The role of purlins in load-bearing structures

The primary function of purlins is to transfer loads and distribute them evenly to other parts of the structure. This reduces stress on individual load-bearing components and reduces structural deflection and deformation. Purlins can act as secondary supports in various structures, such as:

Building roofs: As supports for the actual roof covering, e.g. profiled sheeting or sandwich panels
Building walls: As wall cladding support framing between wall columns.
Intermediate floors: As supports for intermediate floors, e.g. as support framing for floor panels.

Structural design

When designing steel purlin structures, a dimensioning program specifically designed for this purpose can be used to quickly select the correct purlin type, height and thickness.

The dimensioning program Weckman Purlin Master is a free dimensioning program designed for Weckman steel purlins.

You can find the dimensioning program below.
